Subject: More Scam Alerts from Sgt. Al Ostoits SPBPD
On Wednesday 2/06/08
one of our residents alerted our agency of the following scam: She received
a call at her residence from an individual who advised he was Mark from
Allstate. Mark advised the resident "My company is buying your IRA, and we will
provide you with a BONUS check of 10%." The subject then asked the resident for
the name of her IRA accounts. The resident, refused to give this information out
to this stranger on the phone. The subject then advised he made a mistake
advising the resident she wanted long term care insurance. The resident
advised Mark she already had this type of insurance and Mark then asked the
resident for the name of her long term care provider. Again the resident
refused to give this information out to a stranger, so the caller
disconnected.
If you are not the
person making the call, NEVER give out any sensitive information about your self
or family members.
On another note, we
are still seeing people carrying their Social Security cards in their wallets.
Should your wallet get stolen or lost, carrying a SS card could lead you to
becoming a victim of identity theft. Unless you are going to a job interview or
something of that nature, please leave your SS card in a safe secure
place.
